Get Behind Thee Satan: Carl Abrahamsson’s golden age in satanic cinema lecture 2024

Updated: Mar 20

Get thee behind me, Satan, by Carl Abrahamsson, was an absolute treasure to see. I've always really liked Abrahamsson's work, and I have a few of his books on my bookshelf one of which is “inside the Church of Satan”. I also appreciate the fact that he is involved with The Satanic Temple, especially TSTTV, which showcases Carl's work. I had the pleasure of watching Carl’s lecture on Satanic film in the Golden Age earlier this year but didn’t have a chance to write about it up until this point. It was so nice to be able to ask Carl questions directly, though my excitement made me look a bit foolish with my poorly written questions, which, at this point, is on brand for me! I still loved every moment of it.

I appreciated that it wasn't just a one-sided vision of the Church of Satan or the popularised liberal Satanic agenda, which I'm entwined with as the founder of BAFOSatan. I loved learning a few new terminologies and discovering films I hadn't heard of before. Carl did a brilliant job of taking us through the Golden Age of cinema, reminding us how the devil is the Church's best friend in instilling fear in the Christian idea of hell. He proved this by saying that if you add "Satan" to a movie title or incorporate something related to the devil in your artwork, you’re going to put asses in seats.

Carl has always had a pull toward the Satanic, as he shared his journey coinciding with the occult and Satanism in particular. One film that Carl emphasised was The Black Cat Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer in 1934, it features various occult aspects was an absolute treasure to see him speak about it. Carl has always had a pull toward the Satanic, as he shared his journey coinciding with the occult and Satanism in particular. One film that Carl emphasized was The Black Cat Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer in 1934, it features various occult symbols and references to Satanic rituals, emphasizing demonic practices and the influence of Satanic forces—in this case, theistic. The character of Dr. Vitus Werdegast is involved in a complex narrative that includes elements of revenge and the manipulation of life and death, reflecting themes of control associated with theistic or early Satanic ideologies, mostly tied to the Church of Satan. The film explores the thin line between good and evil, showcasing characters with morally ambiguous motives. This duality reflects the idea that humanity is capable of both light and darkness, which aligns with modern Satanic themes. When I asked Carl which film he considered the best or most Satanic-themed in his lecture, he chose this very film. Carl is someone I’ve admired from a distance for a while, given his overwhelming support for Satanism and his many works on the occult.

Carl also made our Antichrist Superstars Satanic Influencers list this year at BAFOSatan, showing our appreciation for this magickal author and filmmaker. Hail Carl!
